At 10 a.m. on October 26, Professor Shi Caijun of Hunan University gave a lecture titled“TheDesigning, Performance and Application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete" in Conference Room 301 of Key Laboratory of Transportation Tunnel Engineering. The lecture was hosted by Professor Zhan Yulin, Vice President of the School of Civil Engineering. Professor Wang Ping, President of the Scientific Research Institute, was present at the lecture. Other attendees included Li Guhua, Li Fuhai, Chen Zhao, Pu Liyun and other teachers and graduate students from the Institute of Civil Engineering Materials.

Professor Shi Caijun briefly introduced the development history of ultra-high performance concrete, analyzed its superior characteristics with specific examples and introduced several practical projects of ultra-high performance concrete. He also introduced several solutions to the autogenous shrinkage of ultra-high performance concrete. He thoroughly introduced five approaches of controlling autogenous shrinkage, such as hydration control, shrinkage expansion compensation and internal curing etc. The methods of replacing silica fume with other materials, adding water reducing agent and adjusting temperature were also introduced. He shared the key technology research and application project of cement-based high-performance structural materials with teachers and students, and analyzed the problems yet to be solved in the project, as well as the various subprojects under each problem. At the end of the lecture, he answered questions from the teachers and students on the application of ultra-high performance concrete.

Through this lecture, the attending teachers and students further understood the progress of the research on ultra-high performance concrete, which helped guide and promote the teaching and research in this field with valuable experiences.

Professor Shi Caijun is among the second batch of national specially recruited experts and a specially recruited expert of Hunan Province. He is also the vice chairman of Asian Concrete Federation, chief professor and doctoral supervisor of Hunan University, distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor of China Building Materials Academy, and director of Hunan Key Laboratory of green high performance civil engineering materials and application technology. His other titles include the founding editor of academic journalJournal of Sustainable Cement-based Materialsof Taylor and Francis, co-editor ofJournal of Ceramics in Modern Technologies, deputy editor ofJournal of the Chinese Ceramic Society, and editorial board member ofCement and Concrete Research,Cement and Concrete CompositesandJournal of the Chinese Ceramic Society. He is a reviewer of more than 80 renowned international academic journals, director of Chinese Ceramic Society, member of several professional committees, including American Concrete Society (ACI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and registered professional engineer of Ontario Province, Canada.
